Obituary for Sister Mary Johnathon Shipp

Sister Johnathon was born in Detroit, Michigan on July 24, 1942, the daughter of Woodie and Francis Shipp. She went on to her Heavenly Father on March 27, 2022 at the age of 80. She was the eldest of three children and was preceded in death by her sister, Mary Catherine Shipp. She is survived by her brother Woodie (Janet) Shipp and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Sister Johnathon attended Detroit schools and graduated from Ladywood High School in Livonia. She entered the Felician Convent after high school at the age of 18. Sister received her Bachelors of Arts from Madonna University and later attended Wayne State University for further studies.

She began teaching elementary school first at St. Michael School in Livonia, following at St. Hillary School in Redford and then finally at Our Lady of Refuge in Orchard Lake. The next 11 years she spent at Patronage of St. Joseph in Detroit. She was the director of the church choir as she had a natural gift from God which was a talent for music, singing and playing her guitar. Sister wrote many of her own songs and beautiful poetry. She had the ability to really relate with children in her teaching. Her favorite thing to do was to take the entire church choir on bus trips to nursing homes and hospitals to perform. The beauty of her church choir was the amazing harmonizing they would do. Sister later spent five years at St. Francis Home for Boys where she taught and was able to give so much tender love and care.

Sister had an open heart for anyone, and was known to be a fearless rescuer for any person, dog or cat that needed a home, including a snake in her bathtub. Sister approached children and her love for animals with a child-like confidence that God would provide for her needs. Years down the road she relocated to Hartland, Michigan, and cared for her mother. She continued her benevolent work and taught religious education at Church of the Holy Spirit in Highland and loved the Adoration Chapel.

Sister Johnathon always had a smile regardless of her struggles, and never complained. Lastly, everyone will remember her for her kindness, gentle soothing voice, spirituality, humility and compassion. She was a living example of what Jesus would do.
