Obituary for Sr. Lee Smith Garretson

Lee Smith Garretson, Sr., a long time resident of West Bloomfield died on April 12th, 2010. He was 87 years old. Born on April 28th, 1922 in Detroit, Michigan, the son of James Ellsworth Garretson and Muriel Alice (Carey) Garretson, Lee grew up in Grosse Pointe, Michigan where he worked at his parents drugstore. He earned his engineering degree from Wayne State University. Upon graduation he entered the US Army to serve in WWII as a First Lieutenant stationed in the Philippines. After discharge he ventured to South America to fulfill a desire to travel, perfect his Spanish and work at the copper mines of Chile.
It was there in Chile that he met his future wife of fifty-nine years, Zahira Vasquez. Starting married life in Ohio they moved to Detroit. He was Mr. Mom, before it was popular, to his seven children, involved in everything from changing diapers to praying and reading bedtime stories and passing out allowances. He worked and retired from the Ford Motor Company. The satisfaction he derived from work prompted him to seek a post retirement career in real estate, the restaurant business (La Cueca of Pontiac) and with the Hercules Equipment Company of Walled Lake.
He had many interests including woodworking, wine-making, photography and music. He promoted a healthy life style, exercising daily until he was 81. He donated blood regularly, becoming a member of the Red Cross Fifty Gallon Club. He will be remembered as a true gentleman who knew the value of being pleasant. It takes less effort to smile than it does to frown.
He is survived by his wife, Zahira; his daughters Patricia (Miguel) Daza, of Tumbaco, Ecuador; Jean (Karl) Zechar, of White Lake; Joanne Giese of Elm Grove, Wisconsin; Leticia (Joseph) Torosian, of White Lake; Rita Ann Peele of Gunbarrel, Texas; his daughters Sandy and Linda; seventeen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren to whom he was lovingly referred to as Petoff. He was preceded in death by his brother James E. Garretson II, his sister Jean Elizabeth Bracken, and his sons Lee Jr. and Michael Garretson.

He was the light of our lives. Se fue la luz.

A Memorial Service will be held at Lutheran Church of the Shepherd King, 5300 West Maple, W. Bloomfield, MI on Wednesday, April 28 at 11:30 AM. Friends may gather 30 mins prior to Service. In lieu of flowers, the family would ask you to consider donating blood to the American Red Cross in his memory. For further information please call 248-684-6645.
