Obituary for Stanley J. Hughes

Stanley J. Hughes, a longtime resident of Redford, died peacefully at his home in Milford on July 29, 2018. He was 95 years old. 



Stanley was born on March 7, 1923 in Detroit, Michigan, the second child of five to Clifford and Jennie (nee. Barnes) Hughes. In 1943, Stanley was drafted into the United States Army and served his country in the Philippines in WWII. Upon his return from the war, Stanley met the young Joyce Wendell through friends and their love quickly blossomed. The couple married on May 13, 1950 and made their home in Redford where they raised their three children.

Stanley was a kind, humble and very loyal to his family and friends. He loved his ever growing family and enjoyed time spent with his wife, Joyce, and traveled the world together. He found joy in working with his hands and keeping busy, which suited him well in his long career as an engineer, electrical draftsman and aerospace engineer. Stanley was involved with creating controls for the first space shuttle and creating the sound system for Elvis’s car. His hobbies included woodworking, tin-smithing, HAM radio and clock repair. Following his retirement, Stanley worked two or three days a week for twenty years at Greenfield Village where he kept active with tin smithing and in the print shop until the age of 87.

Stanley was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Joyce; son, Jay; brothers, Adrian and Clifford and sister, Vivian. He is survived by his his daughters, Holly (Greg) Grogan and Heidi (Norman) Bochnick; seven grandchildren, Jennifer (Brian) Kerrick, Gregory Grogan, Heather (Steve) Knuth, Brianna (Robert) Carrier, Alaina (Matthew) Schatzberg, Tristan Grogan and Luke Bochnick; twenty great-grandchildren, Franklin, Christopher, Colton, Nathan, Jeffrey, Dakota, Dustin, Savanna, Bailey, Brenden, Ethan, Kaitlynn, Drew, Ella, Emily, Jaxon, Carson, Annabelle, Jonathan and Lilly; great-great grandson, Lucian and brother, Donald. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends. 




A Funeral Service will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty St, Milford on Thursday, August 2, 2018 at 11 AM. The Rev. Imogen Rhodenhiser to officiate. Burial and military honors to follow at Oakland Hills Cemetery, Novi. Friends may visit the funeral home on Wednesday, August 1, 2018 from 3-8 PM.

Memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Wounded Warrior Project or the American Diabetes Foundation Camp for Kids.
