Obituary for Stephen E. Simon

Stephen Edward Simon, a resident of Milford, died July 15, 2009 at Huron Valley Hospital in Commerce, Michigan. He was 77 years old.

Born March 28, 1932 to George and Eleanor Simon, Steve grew up in Patton, Pennsylvania with his three sisters. He was called to serve his country shortly after graduating from high school, serving in the US Army during the Korean War. Steve returned stateside to Detroit after the war and began to make a life for himself. The work came easy as he had a warm and trustworthy personality with a sense of humor that naturally pulled you into the jokes he loved to tell. Steve knew he'd found his 'someone special' when he met and fell in love with Helen. He was a polished gentleman, with impeccable manners and respect. When Steve proposed marriage, Helen knew that she was loved and would always be cared for. They married on August 6, 1960. Steve embraced Helens two children, Richard and Frances Marie, as his own. Known as Grandpa, Steve was a loving and wonderful grandfather and great-grandfather. Good times with Michele, Adam and Jack and later, Luke and Elisabeth filled everyones memories. The Simon's home was filled with laughter, with Steve at the center, providing support, humor, a good story and lots of love.

Steve had a good work ethic and enjoyed his chosen profession in retail. Whether at Peoples Target in the years after the war, his many years at Hudson's or later in life when he worked for Rock Financial Showplace, his special way of connecting with people never failed. Well liked , well respected and with more friends than he could count, Steve was nominated for and received the Community Senior Recognition Award while employed at Jerry Baker.

He loved his home and took great pride in gardening. Steve had an eye for landscaping and a natural gift with plants and just seemed to know how to make things grow! Gardening wasn't his only pastime; he enjoyed a good book, classic Western movies, couldn't pass up a game of pool and in earlier days was always up for a round of golf. He passed on his affection for the great outdoors to his grandchildren, taking them on hunting and fishing trips up to Hillman, Michigan. He made memories with them that will last a life time, impressing upon his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and his whole family that joy is easy to find if you're surrounded by the ones you love.

Preceded in death by his son and daughter in law, Richard & Elisabeth Gliga, Steve is survived by his beloved wife, Helen; loving daughter, Frances Marie (Michael) Teasdale; grandchildren, Jack Teasdale, Adam Teasdale, Michele (Andy) Elrod, Marianne Ehliger; great-grandchildren, Luke and Elisabeth Elrod; sisters, Rita (Mike) Shorkey, Betty (Joe) Fanelli, Edithe Simon; numerous nieces, nephews, daughter-in-law, Jeanne Gliga and many dear friends who mourn the loss of a wonderful man and give thanks for his life among them.

A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary Catholic Church, 1955 E. Commerce, Milford, Monday, July 20th at 10AM with Fr. Ron Anderson officiating. Friends may visit at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty, Milford, Saturday 6-9PM and Sunday 1-9PM. Rosary Sunday 7PM. Memorials are encouraged to the Kidney Foundation or American Diabetes or Heart Associations.
