Obituary for Steve Loehr

Stephen Loehr, age 79, a lifetime resident of Milford and parishioner of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, died peacefully at St. Joseph Mercy hospital, surrounded by his family, on December 28, 2018.

Steve was born on May 13, 1939 at home in Milford, Michigan, the only son of Coral and Freeda (nee. McColl) Loehr. Following graduation from Milford High School, Class of 1958, Steve began work at Western Auto and joined the Army Reserves. After an honorable discharge from the Army, Steve began his thirty-two year career at General Motors at the Milford Proving Grounds. He began as a driver and retired as a special test mechanic at the age of 53. He served as a Milford and Brighton Township firefighter.

Steve met the young Arlene Kozlowski through her mom who worked at the Milford Bakery. They fell in love and were married at St. Mary Our Lady of the Snows, the old stone church in Milford on September 2, 1961. They were blessed with their three children, Jeffrey, Mark and Kristen and a grandson, Matthew.

Faith and family were evident in the activities of everyday life. A man of quiet and abiding faith, Steve was a longtime parishioner of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He was a devoted husband to Arlene. Together they traveled to many places including Hawaii, Germany and Austria and were members of the Marv Herzog Polka Boosters out of Frankenmuth, Michigan. He was Arlene’s best friend, protector and driver in the snow and dark. He was a loving and active father who attended his children’s and grandson's many sporting events and kept all of their cars in good working order.

An avid outdoorsman, Steve was a member of the Oakland County Sportfishing Association and enjoyed hunting moose, turkey, deer, partridge and small game and fishing as often as he could on his boat “Fish Dinner.”  Steve was a great cook and would prepare all of the fish and game that he brought home. His family fondly remembers all of the times they would set up a smelt cleaning assembly line and host a smelt fry for family and friends. He would also make homemade wine, pierogi, kielbasa, sauerkraut and even canned fruits and vegetables. The family also shares many fond memories spending time with their father planting, weeding, harvesting and getting bitten by bugs at their friends, the Freiberg's, huge garden. Steve always enjoyed teaching his children about and caring for many rescue dogs, cats and other pets over the years.

He is survived by his wife, Arlene; his sons, Jeffrey and Mark; daughter, Kristen (Bryan) Buskard; grandson, Matthew Chamberlin, as well as extended family members and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Coral and Freeda (nee. McCall) Loehr and three step-sisters, Bertha, Evelyn and Dorothy.
