Obituary for Steven James Pitzer

Steven James Pitzer passed away on the morning of December 20, 2020 after a courageous battle with chronic illness. He was surrounded by family while he peacefully transitioned.

From the beginning of his life to its end, Steve possessed an exemplary resolve, compassion, and curiosity for the world around him. Born in Detroit, MI in the fall of 1952, his life began as the eldest child of the late Paul and Mavis Pitzer. His early years were spent as a responsible son to his parents and a loving confidant and mentor to his brothers, Mark and Roger. This innate boldness and diplomatic disposition continued to blossom and define his life and his many endeavors.

In his youth, Steve experienced athletic and academic success at Cooley High School. He carried this aptitude with him to Michigan State University, where he graduated with high honors. He later went on to earn a Juris Doctor from Wayne State Law School. These years were marked with as much academic achievement as joyous and youthful experiences that he shared with his expansive network of extraordinary friends.

Steve’s prowess and dedication to the law along with his deep connection to the people around him were a defining feature of his life. As an Attorney at Law and Counselor, his generosity with his trusted expertise was unparalleled, and his commitment to advising others without judgement is one of the many gifts he shared throughout his life.

He was a life-long learner that devoured literature on topics ranging from US History to motorcycles to athletics. In addition to his insatiable thirst for knowledge, Steve lived his curiosity for life. Some of his greatest passions were Detroit sports, motorcycling, hunting, and classic cars - all of which he was able to share with his wife, children, family, and friends.

Sixty-eight years with Steve will never be enough. To witness his rare and exceptional brilliance drained by illness was agonizing, so we take solace that he is no longer hurting. Trust that he was cracking dry one-liners until the end, though. We’ll look out for Steve when the sun sets on Lake Michigan in the summertime. He will be sorely missed.

Steve leaves behind his wife of thirty-four years, Mandy, his two children Andrew (Danielle) and Carolyn, his brothers Mark (Elizabeth) and Roger (Kim), and many loving family members and friends.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date when it is safe to gather. As a tribute to Steve, consider registering as a donor through Gift of Life Michigan or make a donation in Steve’s name to Community Sharing of Highland, MI.
