Obituary for Steven John Giles

Steven “Steve” John Giles formerly of Livonia MI and current resident of Village Manor Retirement in Hartland MI, “The Warehouse” as he called it, died holding the hands of his 4th son and his wife in the early morning hours of February 27, 2019. He was 78 years old. Born September 28, 1940 in Petoskey, MI, as Jon Steven Giles, he was the third of seven children of Carl and Mary Jane Giles. There were so many children born that day, the hospital ran out of bassinets and he was placed in a wicker laundry basket. He was “One of a kind”

Upon graduation from Cody High School, Detroit, MI in 1958 Steve joined the United States Navy, where he would serve for 6 years. He was a Seabee in the Navel Mobile Command Battalion FIVE. The Navy sent a red haired boy from Detroit to the South Pacific for 2 years. After being stationed in Port Hueneme, CA he was sent to Guam and Okinawa, Japan.

In the spring of 1966 on a Sunday afternoon, while at a bar enjoying a beer and a sandwich, in walked the love of his life, his “Forever and Ever and Once More” Joan Carol Serwatka. At that moment, the rowdy red head knew he was ready to settle down. Six months later they married on October 15, 1966, Sweetest Day, at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church, Detroit, MI.

He was a man that never sat still, Steven worked 3 jobs and went to night school providing for a family of 4 boys that came within the first 5 years of marriage. Despite the pain of suffering an at work injury in 1978, his authentic vocation was revealed. In true Seabee fashion with his “Can Do” attitude he pushed through daily pain, fulfilled the duties of Husband, Father, Neighbor, Coach, Mentor and Friend.

The red haired kid from Detroit was truly a firecracker, making his presence known wherever he was in any venue. No matter what life chose to throw at Steven John Giles, he still managed to do it “his way”, and no one and nothing was going to stop him.

Steve was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Joan Carol Giles (d. 1998) and is survived by his Sons, Jon (Julie), Ric (Donna), Dean, and Chad (Bobbie) Giles; grandchildren, Nicholas, Cameron, Josh, Sydney, Ryan, Joseph, Amanda and Wyatt; Brother, David (Margaret) Giles; sisters, Mary Jo (Bud d. 2015) McGowan, Amy (Curt) Haggerty, Barbara Lemon, Rebecca (Ralph) Adams and Susan (Larry) Hull. Steven is also survived by many nieces, nephews, extended family and dear friends.
