Obituary for Teresa Russell Krieger, M.D.

Dr. Teresa Russell Krieger, M.D., Pediatrician and longtime resident of Milford, Michigan passed away on Friday, February 18, 2022 at the age of 90 with family by her side.

She was born Maria Teresa Russell Enriquez on March 9, 1931 to the late Guillermo and Teresa Russell.  Even as a child, Teresa knew that family was everything.  Her quest for knowledge and compassion for others led her to study medicine and lead a life of service to others in need.

Teresa was a ground-breaker and was among the first women to graduate from medical school at La Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico. She came to the United States to serve an internship at Baptist Memorial Hospital in San Antonio, Texas before heading to Cook County Hospital in Chicago, Illinois to complete her residency.  Dr. Teresa Russell was then honored to serve as Chief Resident in Pediatrics at Mount Sinai Hospital in Chicago. She was a woman and doctor with integrity, giving voice and standing up for those who needed help. While at Cook County Hospital, she captured the eye and heart of Dr. Norman Nelson Krieger, M.D.  The two of them married in 1959 and were later blessed with five children and 12 grandchildren.

Teresa utilized her talents and skills in pediatrics helping those in need, including volunteer work at wellness clinics for non-insured mothers and children. She was kind and giving of her time in all aspects of life.  She and Norman moved to Milford, Michigan and raised their family in an old farmhouse with a surrounding farm.  She always remained proud of her Mexican heritage and the values of family and culture it represented. She was also proud to have become a citizen of the United States.  Over the years, Teresa has always kept in touch, visited, and remained close with all her family back in Mexico.  She has instilled that value of family in her own family even into a third generation, so proud of her grandchildren for their commitment to family and caring for others.

In her free time, Teresa loved to garden, and was especially fond of her many rose bushes.  She had an affinity for birds, the opera, and the ballet.  Her talents were also seen in the intricate detail of her embroidery and needlepoints, and she was always very fond of RS Prussia antiques. Above all, it was family that brought her the greatest joy.  Especially her grandchildren. Teresa cherished being a grandmother more than anything.  She will be greatly missed by not only her family here, but by her family in Mexico, as well as the many patients and friends she had over the years. All were blessed to have crossed her path and experience her kindness and compassion.

Beloved wife of the late Dr. Norman N. Krieger, M.D.  She is survived by sister Minerva Russell; her children Norman Krieger (fiancé Patricia), Teresa Krieger-Burke (Matthew), Kristen Ciarelli (Michael), and Karen Krieger; twelve grandchildren, Christian, Danielle, Leah (fiancé Patrick), Amanda, Antonio (Brittany), Joseph, William, Dominic, Maria, Vincenzo, Angelo, and Alfonso. She was preceded in death by brother Guillermo Russell and her infant son Kirk.
