Obituary for The Reverend Deborah VanLeuven Kerr

The Reverend Deborah VanLeuven Kerr, after a year long gallant fight with Scleroderma, went home to the Lord on August 17, 2011. She was 58 years old.

Born on December 30, 1952 to James Henry and Alice Ann VanLeuven Bilyeu, Deborah grew up in Milford, graduated from Milford High School and met John Jack Kerr in a Student Government class in college in 1972. The couple was married on August 22, 1975 in Milford Presbyterian Church. Following a call to the ministry, after her seminary years, she was ordained in 1991 and took served as pastor of Belleville Presbyterian Church until June of 2000 when she moved to White Lake Presbyterian Church where she has served to the present.

Reverend Kerr had a gift for seeing the sacred in the everyday and the love of God in the kindnesses shown among ordinary people. She saw in the meek and the mourner and the poor in body or spirit the child of God to be cared for and tended to. Her preaching was informed by her wide reading, her careful observations of her fellow pilgrims, a compassion for fellow sinners and an intimate ability to discern the divine in lifes greatest trials and greatest joys. She treasured her friendships, doted on her immediate and extended family, embraced life to its fullest in all its incarnations as gifts of the God she kept faith in till the end.

She leaves John Jack, her husband of thirty-six years; her daughter, Jennifer; mother, Alice Ann (Vernon) VanLeuven Bilyeu; brothers, James (Carol) VanLeuven, Paul (Portia) VanLeuven; step-sisters, Bonnie Bilyeu & Harry Manza, Julie Bilyeu & Don Kaufman; step-brother, Duane (Pat) Bilyeu; brother-in-law, Gerald (Jackie) Kerr and many extended family and dear friends who join together in mourning while giving thanks to God for her life among them.

A Funeral Service will be held at the Milford Presbyterian Church, 238 N. Main St., Milford, on Friday, August 19, at 1PM with The Rev. Anne Schaefer officiating. Burial will follow at Milford Memorial Cemetery, Milford. Visitation will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty St., Milford, on Thursday 1-9PM and Friday 10AM until 12:30PM.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her name to the Belleville Presbyterian Church, Milford Presbyterian Church or White Lake Presbyterian Church.
