Obituary for Thomas Christensen

Thomas Christensen, 84, of Highland died Thursday, July 21, 2016 of cancer at the Stoneleigh Residence, a hospice home in Lansing, and is now rejoicing in the heavenly presence of God.
Tom was born May 28, 1932 in Detroit, MI, one of six children born to Dagmar (Madsen) and Christen Christensen. He graduated from Redford High School in 1950. Tom joined the U.S. Army in 1952, served in Korea, and was honorably discharged in 1954 at the rank of Sergeant. After his military service, he attended and graduated from Wayne State University with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.

He married Janet Hall on Sept. 25, 1955 and they had four children, Chris, Heidi, Thomas and Norman. They later divorced. Then on April 9, 1977 Tom married Mary Lou (Sanderson) Clay, becoming stepfather to Mary Lou’s eight children.

Tom had a long engineering career, working at a variety of companies, but retiring from Micro-Poise in the mid 1990s and doing consulting work for a number of years after that.
He also was very involved with the Danish Brotherhood Lodge 227, and held of the office of secretary of the lodge at the time of his death. He was a member of the board of directors of the Danish Brotherhood’s Old Peoples Home, the Finnish Cultural Center, and was a member of the American Legion Post 216 in Milford, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) 4357 Brighton Post.

Tom was a member of the Highland Congregational Church, served faithfully on its Stewardship Committee for several years and was a valued member of the HCC Saturday Morning Men’s Bible Study Group.

Tom is survived by his daughter Heidi Christensen and her son Derrick, his brother-in-law Lloyd Charlong, and by stepchildren, Ruth Ann (Greg) Stover, Nancy Clay, Barbara (Bob) Betzing, Don Clay, Richard Clay and Peggy (Kirby) Wicks. Tom also is survived by 16 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his former wife Janet, his wife Mary Lou, his brothers Mark and Norman; sisters Sidsel Charlong, Dorothy Sinclair and Edna French; sons Chris Christensen, Staff Sgt. Tommy Christensen (killed in Iraq, December 2003) and Norman Christensen; stepsons Frederick and Kenneth Clay; and one grandson.

Visitation and a Memorial Service will be Wednesday, July 27, 2016 with the visitation starting at 10 a.m. at the Highland Congregational Church, 1605 N. Hickory Ridge Road, Highland, followed by the Memorial Service at 11:30 a.m. A luncheon will be held at the church following the service.
Burial and Military Honors will take place at 2:30 p.m. at the Highland Cemetery, 561 North Milford Road, Highland, MI.
