Obituary for Thomas Richard Brooks

Thomas Richard Brooks, of Commerce Township, passed away unexpectedly on April 28, 2019, while surrounded by his loving family. He was 70 years old.

He was born August 4, 1948 in Detroit, Michigan to Arthur and Mabel Jeanne (née Hoosier), the second youngest of five. Tom met Sharon Erb, the love of his life, at fifteen years of age. After his graduation from Redford High School in 1966, he attended Ferris State University for two years. Upon taking a break from college, he was drafted into the Army. Before leaving for Vietnam, Tom and Sharon were married on July 19, 1969. While they were later stationed in Virginia, they had their first son, Tommy. On completion of his service, they moved back to Michigan and had their second child, Brian.

Tom loved hockey so much; he owned his own hockey pro shop (Brooks Sports) at Grand Oaks Ice Arena in Howell, Michigan for many years. He continued playing hockey into his late sixties and it was very rare for him to miss his grandsons’ hockey games. In 1993, Tom and Sharon purchased property outside of Petoskey…his little piece of heaven. After retirement, as a casting engineer at Ford Motor Company, he pursued his dream of flying. In 2013, he received his pilot’s license and built his own seaplane. He was a big dreamer up until the end.
He is survived by his wife Sharon, of 50 years; children, Tommy (Lorna) Brooks, Brian (Chrissie) Brooks; grandchildren, Cole, Josh, Lola, Weston Brooks; siblings, Lynne (Dave) Weliver, Robert (Barbara) Brooks, and Bill (Jan) Brooks; also many extended family and dear friends.
Thomas is preceded in death by his brother, Arthur Brooks and sister-in-law, Laura Brooks.
A Memorial Service will be held this summer. DTBD
