Obituary for Thomas S. Dmoch

Thomas Spencer Dmoch, of Commerce Twp., died at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak on Christmas Day after a long and courageous battle with heart disease. He had undergone open-heart surgery earlier this month. He was 74 years old. Born in Flint on September 18, 1934, and raised in Flushing, MI, he was the son of Anthony and Margaret Rose Spencer (Smith) Dmoch. He graduated from Flushing High School in 1953 and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. After Basic Training in San Diego, California, he served at Camp LeJeune in North Carolina. He returned to Michigan to further his education at Michigan State University and began dating Carolyn Cloutier, the girl he'd grown up kitty-corner to in Flushing, Michigan. The couple was married on July 1, 1961 at All Saints Church in Flint. He graduated from MSU in 1963 with his degree in Landscape Architecture. After 3 years in Alexandria, Virginia, Tom and Carol established their family home in Chelsea where they raised their son and daughter.
Mr. Dmoch was an Environmental Protection Specialist. He dedicated 30 years of service to the United States Federal Government (Department of Interior and Department of Defense). He was an eloquent speaker and advocate for good public policy. He lived by the Marine Corp motto - Semper Fidelis - and was a loyal husband, a great dad, and trusted friend who never wanted to let anyone down. He was a life member of the North Oakland County Marine Corps League/Detachment #570, was instrumental in establishing the Chelsea Lions Club, and an active member of the Milford Huron Valley Lions Club after moving to this area. His civic mindedness is something he passed on to his children. Most of all he loved his family. He never missed ball games, concerts or school events when the kids were growing up and always welcomed friends and visitors into his home. A member of the Grass Lake Sailing Club, he loved taking his family sailing on Grass Lake and enjoyed the annual vacations to Glen Lake; a family tradition that later included his grandchildren. Time spent with his family was, to him, the most precious. He will be remembered for his good sense of humor, his eloquence and energy and his deep fidelity to family & friends.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Carolyn Dmoch; loving children, Tim (Barbara) Dmoch; Amy (Michael "Mick") Johnston; grandchildren, Caroline, Ellen & Rose Horste and Abby & Paige Johnston. Also survived by nieces and nephew, cousins, in-laws and dear friends who mourn his death and give thanks to God for his life among them.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Anthony & Margaret Rose Spencer Dmoch.

Funeral Services & Military Honors will begin at 10AM on Tuesday, December 30th at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty, Milford. Visitation Sunday 6-9PM and Monday 2-9PM. Marine Corps League evening service Monday 7:30PM. Memorials encouraged to the Milford Huron Valley Lions Club or N. Oakland Marine Corps League/Detachment #570.
