Obituary for Timothy Allen Westerdale

Timothy Allen Westerdale peacefully passed in his home June 1, 2017 after complications from melanoma leaving behind colleagues who respected him,  a community that appreciated his leadership, and his beloved family, his wife of 53 years, Dorothy “Mim”; daughters Beth (Mark) Kubitskey, Leah (Terry) Rowe, and Penny (Matt) Kazmierski; his sons, Adam (Michelle) Westerdale and Joel (Sarah-Jane) Westerdale; grandchildren, Chris, Cam, Katie, Grace, Christian, Teddy, Elyse, Marie, Reese, Cade, and one more on the way; his elder brother Tom Westerdale; many nieces, nephews, extended family; loved by friends and canine companion, Jazz.

Timmy to his mom, Tim to his wife, Dad and Pop to his five kids, Uncle Tim to his nephews and nieces, and Grandpa to his many grandkids, he was a treasure.

Tim grew up in Union Lake Michigan with parents John and Jeanne and elder brother Tom.  He earned his BA at the University of Michigan and as a young teacher in Inverness Florida, met and married the love of his life Mim Day.   The young couple returned to Michigan where they started their first home, a basement house with a beautiful barn,  a garden hose to fill the bathtub, and had 5 children.  They moved to the Milford South Hill house in 1972, where they lived with and tended to dogs, cats, peacocks, chickens, horses and of course the children.  After child-rearing, Tim and Mim enjoyed living in Ann Arbor. Later in retirement they moved to their lake house in Lakeland/Hamburg.

Tim loved to imagine better alternatives and to work with others to make it happen.  As a businessman in the 1970s, he was a seminal member of the then-developing environmental service industry, acknowledging the first Earth Day’s significance as a collective shift in our country’s view of the environment.  Over the course of 40 years, his business successfully restored and recycled tens of millions of gallons of used industrial oil.  As a community leader, Tim served as president of the Huron Valley School Board and sat on the boards on a number of  trade and community associations.  Most recently he enjoyed supporting Detroit Public School students in designing and developing a new park using repurposed materials.

As a Husband, Father,  Grandfather, co-worker, friend and colleague,  Tim brought compassionate sensibilities, humor,  and an appreciation of life and people which inspired and benefited us all.  Tim dedicated his life to stewardship, hope and joy.  Stewardship looked different at various stages in his life, but through this service he always found that same hope and true joy.

A Celebration of Tim Westerdale’s Life will be held at Eastern Michigan University Student Center’s Ballroom, 900 Oakwood St., Ypsilanti MI 48197 on June 29th, 2017. The service will start at 4PM with visiting from 2PM-4PM. Public parking available directly in front of the student center.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to “Tim Westerdale Foundation” PO Box 263, Lakeland, MI 48143. The foundation is being established to support teachers and students who have shown a propensity for environmental stewardship. More information will be available for those interested in contributing.
