Obituary for Vincent Edward Ruggers

Vincent Edward Ruggers, a life long resident of Milford, died in the loving care of his family on January 1, 2018 after surviving 25 months of cancer. He was 78 years old. Born in Detroit on January 11, 1939, he was the son of Edward and Marion Ruggers. He graduated from Milford High School in 1957, which is where he first met Mona Winstanley, at a dance. She was an eighth grader who asked him to dance, claiming to be a new girl in town. That first dance opened a long and complex love affair of intriguing twists and turns. They dated in high school then each went their separate ways, married others, each of them twice, getting together between spouses and finally finding themselves both single again, they decided to marry twenty-eight years ago, their romance and eventual marriage making sense of the notion of true loves searching and finally finding one another. His parents and her parents were delighted when they finally wed, sensing that each was a good match for the other.
Vince graduated from Oakland University in Rochester, eventually getting his Masters Degree in Education. His teaching career began at St. Patrick’s School in White Lake and long service with West Bloomfield Schools at Abbot Middle School and West Bloomfield High School, where he taught History, Government and Social Studies. He also gave eighteen months of peacetime service to the U.S. Navy.
An avid fisherman and gardener and happy contrarian, Vince enjoyed arguing with the old guys in his coffee club who in turn enjoyed disagreeing with him. But beneath his liberal politics and rhetoric, one could not miss his big heart and compassionate humanity. Always willing to show up, pitch in and do his part for the greater good. Impatient with details and system analytics, Vince was into action, results and outcomes. Lures and knots and fishing technics were not nearly as important to him as the number of fish he caught or the size of the one that got away. He was a man who told good stories, and knew how to listen to the stories of others. He was, in short, a good neighbor, good friend, loving parent and step-parent, grandparent and husband.

In addition to Mona, his beloved wife of 28 years, Vincent is survived by his children, Vince (Janet) Ruggero and Kelly (Dave) Gibson; step-daughter, Kelly Beasley; granddaughters, Rachel, Audrey, Ella and Lily; mother, Marion Ruggers; brother, Don (Laura) Ruggers and the entire Ferrante family as well as aunts, uncles, extended family and dear friends.

Vincent was preceded in death by his father, Edward and sister, Margaret Cytacki.

A Funeral Service will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty St., Milford on Thursday, January 4, 2018 at 12 Noon with visitation beginning at 10 AM. Burial will take place privately at Oak Grove Cemetery, Milford.
