Virgene E. Wright age 86 died Saturday, November 21, 2009 in the loving care of her family.
Virgene was born May 24, 1923 in Detroit, Michigan to parents Lewis Welling & Lulu (nee. McConnell) Jones. Virgene spent her girlhood in the Redford area where she attended high school. After high school, Virgene attended Nurses Training at Harper Hospital in Detroit.
In Detroit, Virgene met the love of her life Bruce A. Wright. The couple fell in love and was married in 1944. Bruce and Virgene were blessed by the births of their five children Dorothy, Bruce, William, Katherine and Doug. Mrs. Wright was a dedicated wife, mother and homemaker. After the passing of her husband and the raising of her children, Mrs. Wright dedicated herself to volunteerism.
Mrs. Wright was actively involved with the Milford Senior Center and Milford Historical Society, having had homes featured on the Home Tour. She was also a long time election official for the Village of Milford.
Always the consummate arts and crafts person, Mrs. Wright created beautiful knitted and crocheted afghans, christening gowns, baby hats, quilts, and holiday wreaths. Over the course of several years, she made thousands of baby hats for the newborns at Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital.
Mrs. Wright was a long time volunteer, first at Botsford Hospital then Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital beginning in October of 1988. Incredibly dedicated to her volunteerism. Mrs. Wright completed 24,000 hours. As a volunteer at Huron Valley, Mrs. Wright served in many capacities including her knitting projects, fundraising; she was on the auxiliary board and was a greeter both at the Cancer Center and the outpatient Pharmacy Department. Mrs. Wright even worked to design a bedside bag for patients in which they could keep their glasses, dentures, hearing aids and other personal belongings. In 2004, Mrs. Wright was honored as an Outstanding Volunteer at the annual Thanks for Giving luncheon.
Virgene was preceded in death by her beloved husband Bruce A. Wright (d. 1980).
She is survived by her loving children Dorothy Wright Berzins, Bruce Wright, William (Susan) Wright, Katherine Wright and Doug (Janet) Wright; dear grandchildren Bruce (Jodie) Wright, Julie (Jay) Knapp, David (Sue) Berzins, Michael (Erin) Wright, Jeff (Alyssa) Wright, Heather (Caleb) Wright Wendel, Chris Wright and Emily Wright; great-grandchildren Jon and Kristina Berzins; also survived by many loving extended family members and a host of dear friends.
