Obituary for Walter "Rocky" Rakocy

Walter “Rocky” Rakocy, was born on August 11, 1921 in what was then know as Delray, Michigan. He passed on May 19, 2017 at the age of 95. He graduated from St. John Cantius Elementary School and later River Rouge High School in 1940. Immediately following high school he enlisted into the Coast Guard and later entered the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a proud veteran of WWII as a corporal in the 1st Marine Division serving in the Pacific Theater. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, sportsman and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 345. In 1949, he married Helen Pitylak of Lincoln Park, spending over sixty loving years together before her passing in May 2009.

Walter was a loving father and is survived by Linda (Michael), David (Cindy), and grandfather (Papa) to Jennifer (John) Hooper, Joel (Theresa) and Kasi (Nick); great grandfather to Ashlee (Bryce) and Devon Bulik, Mason and Scarlett Hooper, Daxton Ollila, and Audrey Rakocy; great great grandfather to Emiliano Westtie. He was also a dear brother to Genevieve and Fr. Richard. Rocky was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Helen, grandson, Scott Gerwatowski, parents, Andrew and Sophie (Koziel) and siblings, Edward, Henry, Frank, Valerie, Fr. John and Harry Rakocy.

Visitation will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty St., Milford, on Thursday, May 25, from 3-8PM. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church, 1955 E. Commerce Rd., Milford, on Friday, May 26, at 11AM with The Rev. Fr. Richard Rakoczy officiating. Cremation will follow. In lieu of flowers memorials to the BrightFocus Foundation, 22512 Gateway Center Dr., Clarksburg, MD 20871. For further information please phone 248-684-6645.
