Obituary for Wayne C. Vernier

Wayne Clemens Vernier, lifetime resident of Highland, died on November 3rd, 2013 at the age of 90.

Wayne was born on March 10, 1923, the eldest of sixteen children to parents Amelia and Joseph Vernier in their home (above a buggy stable) in Highland. Following graduation from Milford High School, Wayne began his lifelong career with Ford Motor Company. During World War II, Wayne joined the Navy and ended up in Marines and served his country from September 2, 1943 until August 18, 1945. Upon his return, he resumed his work with Ford Motor Company, met Peggy and they were married on September 20, 1947. He had a very strong work ethic and taught it well to all of his children, often working a second job. One of his most memorable second jobs was when he delivered Twin Pines milk door to door--there were some pretty funny stories that came from that. Wayne and Peggy eventually built their dream home in Highland in 1960 where they raised their family of five children. He retired from Fords in 1973 and enjoyed 39 years of retirement. Wayne was a craftsman and found joy in helping when called upon by others, especially his friend, Ron Colasanti. There wasn't anything he couldn't fix or build. For example, he wanted a garage in the worst way and he found a way to get it. Wayne found an opportunity to demolish the clubhouse at Highland Hills Golf Course and from the wood he salvaged from the demolition he was able to build a two car garage with a full gambrel roof, after employing his children to pull the many nails. He also made a recreation room in the basement for the kids finished all in knotty pine, complete with juke box, pool table and a bar that was part of the salvage. Birdhouses and bird feeders held Wayne's hobby interest for quite a while and there are still a few of his creations in the family. Wayne cherished the time spent with his family and especially loved spending time with his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy, sons Wayne Jr. (Sue), Dennis and grandson Patrick and is survived by his children, Lon ( Sue), Jon (Patricia Fredrickson), Jean; grandchildren, Kyle (Audrey), Stevan, Nicholas, Gaved (Ginny) Kim, Jason, April, Wayne III, Michael (Roxanne), Matthew (Grace); great-grandchildren, Samuel, Gaved; brothers, Joe (Marge), Clifford, Harvey, Larry, Rodney (Sally); daughter-in-law, Debi Vernier and many extended family and friends.

Funeral Service will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty, Milford on Thursday, November 7, 2013 at 11 AM. Friends may visit the funeral home on Wednesday, November 6 from 3-8 PM.
