Obituary for Wayne D. Cheyne

Wayne D. Cheyne of White Lake died on Sunday, August 1, 2010, surrounded by family, after an extended illness. He was 72 years old. Born in Grand Rapids on April 25,1938, he was the son of Harold and Margaret (nee Schrotenboer) Cheyne. He grew up in Athens, Michigan and after graduation from Michigan State University in 1960, began his career in teaching which eventually spanned 39 years. He first taught science in his home town, at times working nights as well at Kellogg's. After four years he moved to Oakland County, teaching briefly in Farmington before settling in Bloomfield Hills where he taught science at Bloomfield JH, then Andover HS (earth science, chemistry, physics) for the remainder of his career.

In 1968, with the assistance of his younger sister Ardy, Wayne met 'Joanie'. They married in Battle Creek on June 21, 1969. Soon they were blessed with a son, Bob, and daughter, Sarah, and Wayne had earned a master's degree from Oakland University. Wayne Cheyne enjoyed hunting and fishing, traveling and golf. He cared about and worked for: his family, his profession, his community, and the environment. He was an active, dedicated member of the Pontiac-Waterford Big Chief Chorus.

Wayne is survived by Joan Barker Cheyne, his beloved wife of 41 years; their son Robert (Kristy) Cheyne and daughter Sarah (Stephen) Sexton; grandchildren Aaron, Alyssa, Nicholas, Olivia & one granddaughter on the way; sister Ardith (Harold) Pifer, also extended family members and a wide circle of dear friends.

A Funeral Service will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty St., Milford, Thursday, August 5 at 11 AM with visiting beginning one hour prior. William Holmes officiating. Friends may visit Wednesday from 3 - 9 PM. Memorials encouraged to MSU College of Natural Science and Harmony Foundation International.
