Obituary for William Arthur Finley

William Arthur Finley of Milford, MI, passed quietly on January 6, 2020 at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, MI at the age of 95. William “Bill” was born July 5, 1924, the oldest child of Arthur and Lena (Benke) Finley. Bill grew up with two sisters, Alice and Esther. The family moved to a farm in the Milford area in 1938 where Bill and his sisters attended and graduated from Milford High School.

Bill joined the U.S. Navy after high school and was trained to repair ships damaged in the war. Bill was also in the drum and bugle corps and ran the movies to relax the men. He had learned to run projectors while helping his father in Detroit area theaters.

After the war, Bill drove at the General Motors Proving Ground for a short time. He married Doris Erdt in 1950. A daughter, Roberta was born in 1952. Bill, Doris and Roberta spent some time living at the Cape Canaveral Space Center while working on a project there. Then upon returning to his parent’s farm house, Bill built a home, with his father’s help, on the corner of the family farm. While working the farm in Milford, Bill also worked in Detroit area theaters for many years showing movies and repairing projectors until the theaters closed. Bill and Doris also gave birth to two baby boys, but neither survived the Rh factor in their blood. Roberta was killed in an auto accident while driving to Community College classes at the age of 19.

The remaining years, Bill and Doris traveled, camped and took cruises. They worked on the farm and enjoyed having farm animals. They were active members of Milford Presbyterian Church where Bill volunteered many hours teaching Sunday school and working in the sound booth running projection and recording services. He also installed the carillons in the church’s bell tower. Doris passed in May 2019.

Bill is survived by his sister Esther Dawdy of Holt, Mi, three nieces and four nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Lena, his wife, Doris, his daughter, Roberta, two infant sons, his sister, Alice Lippman of Grand Rapids, MI and one niece.

A funeral service will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Directors, 404 E. Liberty Street, Milford on Friday, January 24, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be before the service starting at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow in the family plot at West Highland Cemetery.
