Obituary for William "Bill" Olen Hunter

William “Bill” Olen Hunter, 88, of Fenton, Michigan, longtime school administrator for Huron Valley Schools, passed away on Tuesday, May 3, 2022.

Bill was born on April 5, 1934, the only child of Oscar and Pauline Hunter. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in Keego Harbor, Michigan in 1952. Following high school, Bill received his bachelor’s degree from Michigan State Normal College before completing his master’s degree from the University of Michigan.

He began his teaching career in Pontiac, Michigan before going to Birmingham Groves High School as an Assistant Principal. Following his time at Groves, he accepted a High School Principal position in Durand, Michigan and moved his family there. Three years later, Bill then moved back here to the Huron Valley School District where he served in several administration roles including Director of Human Resources and Assistant Superintendent for Huron Valley Schools. He retired as Assistant Superintendent in 1988.

Bill married his childhood sweetheart, Cathryn, and would be blessed with 64 years of marriage, three children, nine grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. He and his wife were longtime members of Orchard Lake Presbyterian Church. Following retirement, he and Cathryn joined the NOMADS Club and enjoyed some amazing trips over the years, making great friends along the way. They also wintered in Gulf Shores, Alabama to enjoy the sunshine. As they grew older, and Cathryn’s health diminished, Bill was a caregiver for Cathryn for several years until she passed away in 2018.

In his free time, Bill always enjoyed sports, card games, and woodworking making all kinds of different figurine carvings that he would often give out to those he came in contact with throughout his daily life. He rarely worked on a carving that wasn’t already intended for someone he knew. While competitive, Bill had an easy going demeanor to him and a pleasant personality to go along with a genuine kindness he showed to everyone. Anyone that knew Bill Hunter always said he was such a “nice guy”. He also loved jigsaw puzzles, puzzle books, and playing golf (from the “preferred tees” as he would say). He always cherished the times his grandchildren came to see him to go fishing and pick raspberries. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, colleagues, and all who crossed his path in his daily life.

Beloved husband of the late Cathryn for 64 years. Loving father of Jeff Hunter (Deb), Jay Hunter (Kelly), and Kara Endsley (Lloyd). Devoted grandfather Jason Hunter, Abby Hunter, Emily Cosci (Joe), Will Hunter / Patty Sullivan , Kaylyn Eheman (Tom), Anna Nickens (Trent), James Hunter (Susy), Jillian Endsley, and Jenna Endsley. Proud great-grandfather of Jessie Hunter, Marshall Cosci, Truman Cosci, Lucy Nickens, and Lewis Nickens.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 10, 2022 from 9:30am until the time of funeral service at 11:30am at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home 404 E. Liberty St. Milford, Michigan 48381.

Burial will take place at Milford Memorial Cemetery in Milford, Michigan next to his beloved Cathryn
