Obituary for William Joseph McGrath

William McGrath, a resident of White Lake Twp., died on December 19, 2012 at the age of 87. Born on June 4, 1925 in Detroit, he was the son of Charles Parnell and Clara (Hillenbrand) McGrath. He went to school at Visitation, Catholic Central and graduated from St. Cecelia High School in Detroit in 1943. He joined the U.S. Coast Guard and served until the end of World War II -- three years and nine days -- seeing service in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters. He returned to Detroit and took up work as an electrician and moved to Milford in the early 70�s with his widowed mother. She preceded him in death in 1989.

Bill was a long time member of St. Mary�s Church in Milford and active in both the Knights of Columbus and the Ancient Order of Hibernians, his faith and his Irish heritage both important to him. He was well known to Milford residents who would often see him in local eateries or working as a volunteer at church funeral luncheons, K. of C. or community events. He enjoyed golf with the St. Mary�s Men�s League. And he loved his large extended family of siblings, nieces and nephews and friends

William McGrath is survived by sisters, Bettie Sasena of Sarasota, FL and Phyllis Graebert of Traverse City and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and dear friends. He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert McGrath and a sister, Kathleen Mitchell Morrison.

A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary�s Catholic Church, 1955 E. Commerce Road, Milford, on Saturday, December 22, at 9:30AM with the Rev. Fr. Ron Anderson officiating. Graveside Services and Military Honors will be held at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfield. Friends may visit at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty Street, Milford, on Thursday 6-9PM and Friday 3-9PM, with a K of C Rosary Friday at 7PM. Memorials may be made in his name to the St. Vincent DePaul Society.
