Obituary for William Patrick Golden

William Patrick Bill Golden died early Tuesday morning, March 10, surrounded by his family at his home in Milford after a long struggle with heart failure. He was 79 years old. Born on St. Patricks Day (March 17), 1929 in St. Joseph, Michigan, he was the son of William H. Pat Golden and Amethyst Donaldson Golden. After graduation from St. Joseph Catholic High School and Western Michigan University, he served in the US Army during the Korean War, returning in 1954. He was hired by Harold Hansen, then Superintendent of Huron Valley Schools, to come and teach and coach in Milford. This began a long career with the school system during which he coached track, football and basketball, served as a junior high school principal and taught history at Milford High. Mr. Golden had a gift for seeing the best in even the most difficult students. Hed challenge them to do their best and see the best in others too. In over forty years as an educator, he shared his wise counsel, good humor and fighting Irish spirit with generations of Milfords young people.
It was in 1955 when he went home to St. Joes to attend a family funeral that he met and fell in love with Beverly Jean Smith whose family had moved to Western Michigan from South Bend. The couple was married on Februay 11,1956, in St. Joseph Catholic Church, settled into Milford and raised a large and loving family in homes on East Street and Gray Twig Lane.
Bill was a member of the American Legion and Rotary Club, St. Marys Church and the HVEA. He loved sports and travel and Notre Dame football. He loved wintering in Arizona and traveling in his motor home and especially enjoyed his retirement job bagging groceries and visiting with locals at Breens IGA. But most of all he loved his family. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Beverly, and by their sons and daughters, Kathleen (Hal) Steurer of Milford, Bill (Cynthia) Golden of Fenton, Teresa (Frank) Rebidas of Fenton, Kevin (Kimberly) Golden of Milford, Patrick (Tammy) Golden of Texas and Michael(Melanie) Golden of Sturgis. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Maureen Golden in 2003. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren: Amanda & Tara, Billy & Nichole, Joe, Jim & Zack, Konnor, Madison & Ian, Tucker, Wyatt a sister, Kathleen Bowen and a host of dear friends, including his Yorkie, Star a constant companion in his final months.
A funeral Mass will be said at St. Marys Church in Milford on Saturday, March 14, 2009 at 10 AM. Fr. Ron Anderson and Fr. Thomas Meagher will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Marys Cemetery. Friends may visit at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty, Milford, on Thursday from 5-9 and Friday from 2-9PM. Parish prayers Friday 7 PM at the funeral home.
