Obituary for Winifred Bernice Crawford

Winifred Crawford, a life long resident of Milford and eldest member of the Milford United Methodist Church, died in the care of her family at home on the farm on September 20, 2019. She was 101 years old.

Winnie was born on June 13, 1918 in Mount Brydges, Ontario, Canada, the youngest of seven children born to parents, Silas Wesley Hyatt and Nellie Mae Bancroft. When she was eight, the family moved to Michigan on July 4, 1926 and settled in Saginaw. They later moved to Union Lake before making roots in Milford in 1933.

At the age of 16, the young Winifred Hyatt met William “Carlton” Crawford on a blind date and they quickly fell in love. They married on Carlton’s birthday, September 26, 1936 at the old Methodist Church on Union Street in Milford. A gifted seamstress, she made her own beautiful wedding dress. On the farm they kept cows, saved hay, gardened and raised their family. Winifred and Carlton had a long and happy marriage, that she attributed to “being considerate of each other, and not making mountains out of molehills.” They could often be seen holding hands and they took good care of each other until Carlton’s passing in 2007.

She was a devoted member of the Milford United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years, was a long time 4-H leader, a charter member of the Milford Historical Society, and a member of the Maria Moore Questers. She was a loving mother and grandmother who loved to cook, entertain for the holidays, and who always had her door open for people and good conversation.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Carlton Crawford, in 2007, and a daughter, Judith “Judy” Johnstone. She is survived by her son, William “Bill” and daughter, Marjorie “Marge” Kauffman; grandchildren, Paul (Paula), Greg (Bob) and Edward (Lynn) Kauffman; Bonnie Johnstone and Kari (Andrii) Johnstone; great-grandchildren, Braden, Brittany, Tanner, Alanna, Noah and Quinn, Nestor, and Bailey; great great grandson, Oliver, and many nieces, nephews, neighbors and friends who join with the family in mourning her death while giving thanks to God for her life among them.

Visitation will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty St., Milford on Monday, September 23, 2019 from 3-8 PM.

A Funeral Service will be held at the Milford United Methodist Church, 1200 Atlantic Street, Milford on Tuesday, September 24, 2019 at 11 AM, with visitation beginning at 10 AM. Pastor Doug McMunn officiating. Burial Oak Grove Cemetery.

Memorials may be made in her name to the Milford United Methodist Church Building Fund, to the Milford Historical Society, or to Community Sharing.
