Obituary for Winona R. Kostecke

Winona Kostecke, a long time resident of Milford, died on January 15, 2015 at the age of 88.

Winona Kostecke , always called Nonie by her friends, was born in Atlas, Michigan, to Gilbert and Fern Smith. Nonie knew the large events of the 20th century as they unfolded. Her Mother and her Aunt Ruth had been teachers in one-room school houses. Her dad was a veteran of World War I.

When the Great Depression devastated so many family farms, Nonie moved in with her grandparents, while her parents worked at jobs away from home. She appreciated the improved economy that allowed them to become a family again. She met her husband, Raymond Kostecke when he attended college in Flint, Michigan. Ray was destined to be a Civil Engineer, but during the final year of World War II he was a fighter pilot, completing 23 flight missions over Germany. It was an anxious time for Nonie, but Ray returned safely to his wife and new daughter. After a short stay in Caro, Michigan, they settled into a ranch house on Marlene St. and became the parents of eight children. It was a lively scene, but the day always ended with all the children and the parents sitting down to dinner at home.

Nonie's main passion was always her family, but she felt any young person she met was a part of that family. Did a young lady need a wedding cake? Did a grandchild need a velvet Christmas dress? She could craft any hand-made object she decided to make. Even late in life she knitted scarves for homeless people in Detroit, and she assembled beautiful scrapbooks of her life. Her quilts were especially beautiful and welcome gifts for children and great grandchildren.

Finally, Nonie was a person of great faith. Her love for God and for other people was clear to anyone who met her. She was a blessing to all the people who knew her, and we will miss her.

She was preceded in death by her husband Raymond John Kostecke in 1998 and is survived by her children, Dawn (Jonathan) McDuffie, Larry Kostecke, John (Louise) Kostecke, Mary (Mike) Stanley, Dan (Tammy) Kostecke, William Kostecke, Michael (Rekha) Kostecke and Krystal (Jeremy) Dayton; grandchildren, Sarah (John) Brown, Nancy (Kent) Jennings, Christina Kostecke, Benjamin Kostecke, Jessica (Bryan) Stowinsky, Brooke Prater, Amanda (Mark) Laidlaw, Nina Kostecke, Tracy (Blake) Carroll, Danny (Rachael) Kostecke, Abbey, Parker, Peter, and Ryder Dayton, and Jay Kostecke; great grandchildren, Isaac, Elijah, Hazel, Naima, Brooklyn, Bryan, Jonathan, Charlie, Jacob, Miles, David, Sean, Aiden, Alex, Aaron, Austin, Andrew, Max and Eleanor; brother, Gary (Nancy) Smith; brother-in-law, Steve (Joan) Kosteck; sister-in-law, LoRayne Kostecke. Also survived by many nieces, nephews and other extended family members and dear friends.

A Funeral Service will be held at Our Savior Evangelical Lutheran Church, 13667 Highland Road, Hartland, on Tuesday, January 20, at 11AM. Friends may visit at the church on Tuesday from 10AM until the time of service. A luncheon will follow at the church. Following the luncheon interment will be in Milford Memorial Cemetery. Memorials may be made in her name to the Juvenile Diabetes Association. For further information please phone 248-684-6645
