Obituary for Wm. Howard Armstrong

OBITUARY

Wm. Howard Armstrong, a life long resident of Highland, died on Sunday, August 16 after a brief illness. He was 91 years old. Born on May 19, 1924, Howard was the son of Roland and Lena (Wakeman) Armstrong. He grew up on his father’s dairy farm and attended Milford High School where one of his classmates was Thelma Burley whom he knew from the Baptist Young Peoples Union at West Highland Church. They started dating in the spring of 1941 and married on Monday, the 15th of November in 1943, Howard’s grandparents’ golden wedding anniversary. The young couple honeymooned in Grand Rapids.

The early years of their marriage – in the middle of World War II -- were spent milking and calving cows, planting and raising crops, pickling and canning and delivering goods to local markets and customers. Howard had registered for the draft, like all men of his generation, but was given and agricultural deferment as essential to the war effort at home. They joined the Farm Bureau and remained active members of their church, teaching Sunday School and singing in the choir.

In 1948 Howard took up a side job in millworks to make truck beds and potato crates and other necessities. This soon grew into Armstrong Millworks – now a fourth generation family enterprise which has made everything from baseball bats and trophies to church pews, altars and pulpits. Their wood products have gone around the world and to the moon on the lunar rover. Today the millworks is a full service supplier of milled and shaped wood products made from 41 domestic and exotic hardwoods with an extensive line of custom moldings. The business and Howard and Thelma never strayed from the 130 acres in West Highland they’ve always called home. Armstrong Millworks is still run by the generations of the family that grew up around Howard and Thelma, guided by their abiding values of hard work, honest dealings, quality craftsmanship and good will.

And though Howard never strayed from his family and friends, church and community, he and Thelma did travel the world and document those travels for family and friends to share. Hours of their adventures are among the archives, film and narrative, local and global, that have recorded the history of their lives and times and the people and places with whom they shared their journey.

And though he was deeply rooted and widely traveled, Howard Armstrong always knew where he was going, endeavoring in all things to conduct himself in ways that would bring him ever closer to the Lord. He lived by faith and abiding hope and loved his neighbors, friend and stranger alike, as a brother or sister in the family of God to whom he gave all thanks and praise for life and its abundant gifts.

Most cherished among those gifts are his wife of over 71 years, Thelma and their sons, Thomas (Lois) Armstrong and Dennis (Susan) Armstrong; grandchildren, Abbey (Jayson) Moore, Adam (Rachel), Mark (Anne) and Monica (Rustin) Phillips; great-grandchildren, Owen, Avery, Mallory, Eli, Ezra, Kellen, Grady, Layton, Grayson, Emmerson and Conner; a sister, Loris (Garner, d.2015) Sherwood as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who, while mourning the passing of an exemplary man, join their voices in giving thanks to God for Howard Armstrong’s life among them.

The funeral service will be held from West Highland Baptist Church, 1116 S. Hickory Ridge Road in Highland at 11 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 24. Pastor Tom Roberts will officiate.
