Obituary for Bernard Joseph Shubitowski

Bernard Joseph “Bernie” Shubitowski, a resident of Milford area for sixty years, died at Huron Valley Sinai Hospital on Saturday, March 17, 2018. He was 86 years old. Born in Detroit on October 2, 1931, he grew up on Yellowstone Street, one of nine children and the first boy after four girls, of Bernard J. and Eleanor (Schultz) Shubitowski. The family enjoyed vacations at Harbor Beach on Lake Huron in Michigan’s “Thumb” region where a lifelong affection for boating and camping, swimming and skiing and enjoying the long blue sandy edge of Michigan summers became a fixture of Bernie’s family life. He met and was quickly smitten with Joan Lockwood. The pair married on May 25, 1948 and Bernie went to work with Twin Pines Farm Dairies, for whom he delivered milk for twenty years. In 1958, he and Joan and their growing family moved out to Milford and settled in at St. Mary’s Church where Bernie was an usher for many years.

A child of the Great Depression, Bernie Shubitowski was frugal in every aspect. He loved to be out of doors, loved his tractors, loved gardening with his kids and grandkids and loved eating food grown out of their own ground and labor. And while he knew the cost of things, he likewise knew real value and so was always abundant in love and kindness, living life on life’s terms and treasuring the time spent with his wife and the generations of the family that grew up around them. He was accepting of others, did not look for disagreements, always willing to show up, pitch in and do his part. Happiness came from a good heart, like grace -- free gift of faith and hope and love. And Bernie Shubitowski was a happy, contented man.

He is survived by his wife of sixty-nine years, Joan, and by their children:
Donna (Andy) Lovrin, Janet (Dan) Shubitowski, Thomas (Renia) Shubitowski, Nancy (Chuck) Snider, Jill (Mike) McDiarmid and Jack (Romy) Shubitowski; thirteen grandchildren, Amy, Heidi, Ann, Andrea, David, James, Brian, Reed, Andy, Kathryn, Tyler, Eric, Jamie and seven great-grandchildren who are joined by a host of extended family and friends who mourn the passing of a good man and give thanks to God for his life among them.
