Obituary for Denver Lodean Dunn

Denver L. Dunn, a longtime resident of Highland, died peacefully in his home on April 5, 2018 at the age of 88.

Denver was born on May 24, 1929 in Harrisburg, Illinois, the only child of Esco Dunn and Opal Chancy. Opal passed when Denver was three, and his father later remarried to Alta Barnes, who helped raise Denver.

Following graduation from Harrisburg High School, Denver moved to Michigan and began work at the Fisher Body Plant in Pontiac Michigan, where he met the young Rose Shebella at the grocery store. The young couple married on August 26, 1950 in Pontiac, Michigan. Denver realized he didn’t want to work in a factory the rest of his life, so he returned to Illinois where Denver earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Southern Illinois University, and later, his Master’s Degree at the University of Michigan.

Denver and Rose moved back to Michigan in 1959, made their home in Highland, and were blessed with two daughters.

Denver was a kind, calm and caring man, which suited him well with his work at Huron Valley Schools for over 30 years. He was the shop teacher for many years, where he could teach others his love of metal and wood craft. Ever active in the Huron Valley School system, Denver was also the Assistant Principal of Milford High School, the Vocational Director, led the Indian Education Program, taught driver’s Ed, helped as a Counselor, ran the Build-A-House Program and was Sponsor of the Milford High School Class of ’63. Denver and Rose have been active at St. Mary’s Church for over sixty years. He will be forever remembered for his sense of humor, patience and his loving nature. Denver enjoyed playing golf, leather crafting, playing cards, and old westerns on TV. Most of all, Denver cherished his family and was an exemplary father and grandfather.

He is survived by Rose, his beloved wife of sixty-seven years; his daughters, Lisa (Steven) Zerwas, Michelle (William Matich, Jr.) Dunn; grandchildren, Jenna (Bryan) Ladd, Ryan (Melissa) Zerwas, Erin Zerwas; great-grandchildren, Evan Ladd and Elijah Zerwas, as well as many dear friends.

Visitation will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty St., Milford on Sunday, April 8, 2018 from 3-8 PM, with a vigil led by the St. Mary’s Men’s group and time of sharing at 7 PM.

A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 1955 E. Commerce St., Milford on Monday, April 9, 2018 at 10:30 AM with gathering beginning at 10 AM. Burial St. Mary’s Cemetery, Milford.
