Dr. Harold E. “Skip” Book, a lifelong resident of Milford, died peacefully at his home on Main Street on Tuesday, May 8, 2018 of complications of an aortic aneurysm. He was 76 years old. Born on March 11, 1942, he was the son of Dr. Earl and Lois (Mead) Book. Skip grew up in Milford, attended Milford schools, graduating in the 1960 class of Milford High School and returned to Milford after honorable service as an Army Medic in the Vietnam War. He finished his education as a chiropractic physician, and joined his father in The Book Clinic, on Main Street, caring for hundreds of patients over the years. He loved the community and its people and tended to their health regardless of their means. He was generous with his healing arts and good counsel.
When not treating patients, Dr. Book, ever curious and teachable – he’d accumulated three doctorates -- enjoyed photography, snowmobiling, and Arabian horses. He was a member of Huron Valley Saddle Club. And he loved joining his voice with others in the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America, Inc. He could be heard harmonizing with other barbershoppers at Rotary and Zonta meetings, in the American Legion Hall, church socials and potlucks, his easy smile and ear for harmony, his bowtie and handlebar mustache recalling simpler times and hometowns where folks could disagree without being disagreeable; even folks who saw things differently, could live in harmony as friends and neighbors.
He loved his family and was especially proud to have his daughter Dr. Rebecca Book, become the third generation to treat patients at the clinic her grandfather had established and her father saw through nearly half a century.
Skip is survived by his daughters, Jenny (Todd) Kellerman and Dr. Rebecca Book; grandchildren, Nicholas, Alec, Joe and Emma; brother, Larry; sister, Bonnie (Jack) Hoult. He is also survived by many extended family members and many dear friends.
