Obituary for Rosemary Joan Mitchell

Heaven gained a beautiful, humble, devoted soul on June 5, 2018. Rosemary Joan Mitchell passed away, leaving behind a family who she poured her love into every single day of her earthly life, but finally reuniting with her best friend and greatest companion, her husband Jim. She was 85 years old.

Rosemary was born in Detroit on November 27, 1932 to parents Basil and Ruth. She was raised in a loving family alongside siblings El, Don and Annie. They were fortunate to share a home with grandparents Joe and Nell, uncle Myrle, aunt Ginny and cousins Dorothy and Carol. She also was surrounded by members of the Birch side of her family and very much enjoyed spending time with them. From the beginning, Rosemary understood the importance of a close, supportive, loving family system.

In Detroit, Rosemary attended St. Rose of Lima school, where she graduated in 1950. She wanted to be a writer when she grew up and practiced writing every chance she got. Soon after high school she met “bad boy” Jim Mitchell, who she married on May 3, 1952. Together they would journey through life, raising eleven children and laying to rest one angel baby. In 1974 the family moved from Detroit to Lincoln Park, where they stayed until Jim’s retirement in 1991. In their retirement years they moved to a little piece of heaven in Lewiston, where they enjoyed peaceful days surrounded by beautiful wilderness. They looked forward to hosting family visitors and spending time sharing memories, silly stories, and playing cards and games. Every moment was an opportunity for Rosemary and Jim to delight in the family they created and watch as their children raised children of their own.

In 2006 Jim passed away, taking a piece of his beautiful wife’s heart with him. Still, Rosemary entered into this new, difficult phase of her life with the same inner strength and grace she always exhibited. She moved to White Lake where she was able to be much closer to her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Family continued to be her number one priority, as she supported every member at concerts, plays, sporting events and celebrations large and small. Whether born a Mitchell by blood or by marriage, every single member of her family was treated as the most important person in the world in her presence. Her silly sense of humor was a constant source of joy, and she never missed an opportunity to dress up in costume just to make others laugh.

Rosemary’s generous spirit extended well beyond family, into her community. She loved to volunteer at schools, with her favorite activity being Santa’s Secret Workshop. She was an active member of St. Mary Our Lady of Snows Church in Milford, teaching catechism classes and assisting with funeral lunches. No matter where she was, Rosemary looked for ways to improve her little corner of the world. In her leisure time, she enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, watching game shows and Dancing with the Stars. She was pleased to have had the chance to swim in all five of the Great Lakes, and even attempted to swim across the Detroit River. She enjoyed watching all sports, and was thrilled to attend Detroit professional basketball, football, baseball and hockey games all in the same year.

Rosemary is survived by her children, Mary Ellen (Butch Cross) Mitchell, Val (Joe) Descamps, Tim (Charlene) Mitchell, Michael (Lila) Mitchell, Tom (Laura) Mitchell, Rich (Tammy) Mitchell, Robert (Margie Kovacs) Mitchell, Billy Mitchell, Bridget (Jason Orman) Zajas, Kevin (Sandy) Mitchell, and Becky (Jason) Lamb; grandchildren, Linda, Phillip, Janet, Angie, Matt, Kenny, Dawn, Cindy, Chris, Brian, Justin, Scott, Adam, Eric, Mitch, Amy, Jacob, Kyle, Abby, George, Emily, Cat, Jamie, Theresa, Kevin, Nick, Ben and Jon; great-grandchildren, Lucas , Brendon, Tyler, Mason, Brady, Michael, Ally, Claire, Kylene, Max, Brooke, Sam, Leilend, Aarya, Tabitha, Lily, Alivia, Adam, Aubree and Nik. She is also survived by many extended family members and dear friends.

Rosemary is preceded in death by her husband, James (d. 2006); daughter, Theresa Rose (d.1957) and grandson, Brent Mitchell (d. 2017)

The loss is immeasurable, but so is the love left behind. Every moment of Rosemary’s life was lived with love. To anyone lucky enough to have known her, this world will never be the same.
