Obituary for Edward James Stanlake

Edward James Stanlake, a long time resident of Milford, died at his home on May 11, 2012, at the age of 84. Ed was born to Guy and Clara (Lamphere) Stanlake on May 10, 1928 in Lansing, Michigan and grew up in Walled Lake. Ed would lose his father at the young age of 8 years old, and would be raised by his mother along with his six siblings.

As a teen, Ed worked at the Keefoe Fur Farm (Fox) in Walled Lake until he would leave to enlist into the military. He proudly served his country in the US Navy and enjoyed his years on the USS Tilefish Submarine (1946 - 48). During WWII, Ed would receive word of his mothers passing. Ed liked to join with other submariners as a member of the Muskegon group to reminisce and share stories of their naval careers.

In September of 1953, Ed would marry the love of his life, Jackie, and together they would raise their family in the home he built. After 30 years at the FORD Rawsonville Plant, he spent his twenty years wintering in Ruskin, Florida for six months of the year. Known as The Bike Man, Ed pedaled his bike around his community talking to and visiting with neighbors and friends.

Always an outdoorsman, Ed enjoyed hunting, fishing, hiking, and camping throughout Michigan. An avid gardener, Ed would grow tomatoes and cucumbers to use in his salsa and pickles, as well as, making pickled bologna. When not spending time at the cottage in Indian River, he looked forward to time in his workshop where he would work on clocks, or on a wood project. He was always up for a good Buddys Pizza and celebrated there with family for his 84th birthday this year. Amigo, his loyal Chihuahua, was Eds best friend and companion, and will miss Eds tender love and care. A fair and honest man, you always knew where you stood. He will be missed by his grandchildren, Jayme, Angela, and Christina Smith, great granddaughter, RaeNelle Smith that lit up his life, along with his son, Dennis, and daughter, Vicki (B.J.) Smith, dear friend, Bernice Lawrence and much extended family and many dear friends.

A Funeral Service and Military Honors will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty St., Milford, on Monday, May 14, at 2PM. Friends may visit on Monday from 12 Noon until time of service. Cremation will follow. Interment Potterville Cemetery, Benton Twp., Michigan.
