Obituary for Frances Rosalie LaPerna

A celebration of Fran’s life from 1925 to 2019.

Frances Rosalie LaPerna (Saputo) was born to Angelo and Antonina Saputo on February 5, 1925 in Highland Park Michigan. Fran was one of five children and grew up in a close knit Italian family. Fran’s brother Joe was best friends with a young man named Gasper LaPerna. After many years of teasing his buddys little sister, Gas and Fran eventually became sweethearts. After WWII ended, they began their life together and were married on July 5, 1947. They purchased their first home on West Parkway in Detroit. All of their children were born while living there. Fran and Gas moved to Livonia in 1974. Fran spent most of their married years working the hardest job on earth – a stay at home Mom to seven children. Once the kids grew up Fran worked at various part time jobs. A dry cleaner, a floral shop, Kmart and Sams Club. But what Fran is most famous for is her love of sewing, crocheting and knitting. She taught and shared these gifts with her daughters and friends. There isn’t much on earth that brought Fran more joy than making a blanket for a loved one.

Many of the family traditions that she and Gas inherited were passed on to her children and ultimately her grandchildren. The gathering of family to make Italian is sausage, cannoli’s and many other Italian dishes are just a few of those traditions that are still carried out til this day. Her grandchildren are blessed to have spent many days and nights with her at her home in Livonia. She loved to play Yatzee, Uno and other card games with her grandchildren and most of the time she would win! She also loved to spend time with them in the kitchen teaching them to bake and make “Chex mix”.

In 2004 Fran moved to Oregon to live with with Kathi and Jeff. She enjoyed watching her grandchildren and great grandchildren play various sports and was willing to sit though games rain or shine. Fran moved back to Michigan in 2011 to live with Mary and Luke. She would often say how blessed she was to have such a loving family. We would often remind her that she (and Dad) were the reason for this accomplishment. Fran lived a selfless life and was always there to help out any of her children or grandchildren. She and Gas invested much time and love into their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her life is defined by love, hard work, selflessness, charity and humility.

Fran was an amazing woman that is loved and will always hold a very special place in the hearts of all who knew her. She leaves a family that will always honor her, be forever thankful for the love and support that she provided to her family. She will be forever cherished by those who call her “Mom, Sister, Nonna, Great Nonna, Gram, Fran and “the lady who knits”.

Fran was proceeded in death by her husband: Gasper LaPerna , her children: Tony and JoAnn LaPerna and Nina and (husband Mal) Vickers, her grandchildren: Josh Carley and Christine LaPerna

Her surviving children: Jo Berg (Mike), Kathi Carley (Jeff), Tom LaPerna (Michelle), Mary Mudd (Luke). Surviving sister: Grace Karbousky.

Her grandchildren: Emily and Bill Vickers, Jenna Berg and Rose Guglielmetti, Justin and Tony Carley, Jason, Joey and Katie LaPerna and Dalton Sitzler.
